Installing the Go-Between

Note: This is the print view with all the Reference Manual pages on one page. The paginated version is available here, if you prefer that.

1. Installing

The Go-Between installer may be downloaded from the OpenEngagement web site at: http://www.openengagement.com/gobetween-download.html. The site also contains information describing each version of the DMS and Go-Between. The versions of the DMS and Go-Between must match.

The Go-Between must be installed on any computers where users wish to use Working Papers to interact with the OpenEngagement DMS and may be installed anywhere on the computer, though it is likely the most convenient to install it in its own directory. If Quick Upload will be used on this computer, it may be desirable to install Quick Upload to this directory as well. For example, users may create a directory called c:/openengagement. This folder would contain the Go-Between file, its configuration file (described later), and possibly the files related to Quick Upload. This folder would also contain, if logging is enabled, a sub-folder for the log files.

The Go-Between installer simply places a file called dms.dll in the specified directory and registers it with Windows, which allows Working Papers to find the file. Where necessary, users may delete or move this file, though moving the file will require re-registering it with Windows, described later in the help.

Once installed, the Go-Between may be accessed through a series of menu items in Working Papers, and by the Load From OpenEngagement option in the opening dialog. The Go-Between may be accessed from the menu items: File | Load From OpenEngagement, File | Save To OpenEngagement and Tools | Options | CMS.

2. Installing New Versions

Installing new versions of the Go-Between should be done whenever new versions of the DMS are used. In the case of Local Solutions, firms will control when the DMS server is upgraded; with Hosted Solutions, OpenEngagement takes care of all upgrades. When the DMS is upgraded, firms simply download the corresponding version of the Go-Between from the OpenEngagement web site and install it. This will place a new version of the file, dms.dll, on the computer and will register it with Windows.

It is simplest to keep all versions of the Go-Between file in the same directory, and whenever installing new versions of the Go-Between to put them in this same directory. Doing this, installing the Go-Between will over-write the old version of the Go-Between with the new version, which keeps maintenance very straight-forward. Users will very rarely wish to have two or more copies of the Go-Between on a computer.

Where users save new versions of the Go-Between to different file locations than previous versions, they should un-register, and preferably delete, previous versions of the Go-Between before installing the new version. This is explained later in this documentation.
