Who is behind OpenEngagement? OpenEngagement is an initiative of CaseWare International Inc., the premier provider of assurance, reporting and analysis tools. CaseWare's family of products and services helps professionals in over 60 countries perform their engagements more easily and efficiently. CaseWare is the maker of the widely-used Working Papers accounting application. Why has CaseWare decided to develop OpenEngagement? CaseWare decided to develop OpenEngagement to provide you with much needed content management functionality and to harness the collaborative promise and cost-savings of open source software. I am already a CaseWare user. Why should I consider using OpenEngagement? You should consider using OpenEngagement because it will enable you to do more with less effort. As a current CaseWare user, you know that CaseWare enables you to go paperless within an engagement and if you use the new 2006 version to even take advantage of many new paperless and collaborative features (for example, easy integration and annotation of scanned documents, pdfs, and e-mails). This functionality certainly makes paperless engagements easier to accomplish, but is limited to CaseWare engagements. For other types of engagements and documents you may still be searching for a paperless process. OpenEngagement DMS is a good solution as it can manage both CaseWare engagements and other (non-CaseWare) engagements and documents, providing a centralized area for the entire firm. As a CaseWare user, I have been able to organize my office by including other engagements and documents into CaseWare Engagement files and using Microsoft Explorer (i.e., using the native file system for Windows). Why should I now adopt OpenEngagement? If you have found a process that works for you, you may not want to switch to OpenEngagement, though you may want to consider using CaseWare Tracker to make your work-around solution more effective. We have found, however that many practitioners and firms find the Microsoft Explorer solution too limited. For example, they may desire the following additional functionality: + A place to easily manage an archive of all their files in electronic format. + Engagement and document workflow with the ability for various authorized staffers to manage different states (e.g. in process, ready for review, completed, archived etc.). + Exchange parts of the engagement with their clients or others outside the team. + Consistent interface with their engagements and all other content (such as references, best practices etc.) + A consistent web interface for their entire office so that it is easier to access all content remotely. None of the above functionality can be accomplished easily with the Microsoft Explorer interface. By contrast, with OpenEngagement DMS all of these tasks are straightforward and easily accomplished. But don't take our word for it. Give OpenEngagement DMS a try to see if it meets your needs. Can I still use Working Papers after I implement OpenEngagement? Yes, OpenEngagement will neither disrupt nor replace your CaseWare Working Papers application. We have, in fact, designed OpenEngagement to interact with and complement Working Papers, instead. How does OpenEngagement differ from CaseWare's Tracker? The two products actually provide different functionality. Some firms, however, may choose to simply use one or the other product, while other firms choose to take advantage of both. Tracker is used to locate and list Working Papers client files on a computer or network, which OpenEngagement cannot do. While Tracker simply leaves the client files where it finds them, OpenEngagement is used to actually store and control access to the client files. OpenEngagement has many features Tracker does not have, such as workflow, security, history, archiving, web browser access, etc. Both products allow firms to see a list of the client files within a firm and launch them within Working Papers. OpenEngagement works as well with all other file types. How does OpenEngagement interface with Working Papers? OpenEngagement uses a "bridge program" called the Go-Between to integrate OpenEngagement with CaseWare Working Papers. The Go-Between appears in CaseWare Working Papers as a set of easy-to-use menu items that allow you to transfer/save engagement files to and from OpenEngagement DMS. Future versions of OpenEngagement DMS will continue to even more tightly integrate with CaseWare Working Papers and other CaseWare products such as CaseWare Time and the Firm Tracker. How is OpenEngagement integrated with Working Papers beyond availability of the Go-Between? The DMS displays information from the engagement files, such as engagement type and period end, which can be viewed within the web browser interface. If I am not a CaseWare user, can I still use OpenEngagement DMS? Yes, you can. OpenEngagement DMS can be used by any interested users. There are some features that are specifically useful only to Working Papers users, and you will not be able to take advantage of those, but otherwise the DMS will be completely functional. OpenEngagement products are designed specifically for accountants and auditors, not just Working Papers users. Back to main FAQ page
